How Often Should You See a Chiropractor for Neck Maintenance?

For neck and upper back maintenance, most people do well seeing a chiropractor about once a month. When you first come in with a sore neck, visits are closer together, usually once or twice a week for two or three weeks, then we space them out. How often you should see a chiropractor after that depends on how you respond, what your work and life are asking of you, and what you want.

How often should you see a chiropractor at the start?

When you first come in, the neck is usually quite sore and getting in the way of normal things like work, driving or sleep. The goal is to get you out of pain, so we book visits closer together and do more hands-on care to calm everything down.

Typical chiropractic visit frequency for neck and upper back pain
Phase Typical frequency Goal
Calming things down 1 to 2 times a week for 2 to 3 weeks Settle the pain and get you moving
Building back up About weekly for 2 to 4 weeks Fewer visits, more of your own exercises
Maintenance (optional) About once a month Keep stiffness and flare-ups in check

These are typical ranges. Some people need three visits and then don’t need to come back for a month. Others need eight visits to calm things down and then like to come in every two weeks for a while.

If it was a one-off episode and your neck usually feels fine, you might only need four to six visits. Then you go on your way until something bothers you down the road, and we work on it then.

Who is monthly maintenance care good for?

The best candidates are people who get stiffness, soreness or headaches on and off, and who respond well to care. They usually find monthly visits help a lot.

Two patients I see often at our Kanata clinic fit this well. One is a police officer who sits for long hours in a cruiser, then has to get out and move quickly, all while wearing body armour and a duty belt. Care gives them a lot of relief, and then the stiffness slowly comes back because the job hasn’t changed.

The other is a Kanata North software developer who comes in every month. They do their exercises and stay active, but long hours at a desk and deadlines leave their neck stiff and sore.

Monthly care works best alongside your own work. Between visits, you keep up your exercises and the small habit changes we’ve made, like adjusting your monitor height or taking a break from the desk every hour.

Do you have to keep going once you start?

No. This is one of the most common worries I hear, and for most people it never turns out that way.

Your needs change with the seasons of your life. When work, family or training is demanding, you might want more care. When those ease off, you’ll often feel good and need much less.

I see a lot of teachers during the school year when work is stressful. In the summer they’re camping, outside and more active, and I don’t see them until fall.

Why we don’t sell visit packages

We don’t do prepaid packages. We make a plan at your first visit, but it’s hard to predict exactly how someone will respond until we get into it. Some people need three visits, some need eight. I’d rather see how you do and adjust as we go.

What treatment looks like at Highlands

Your first visit starts with an assessment of your neck and upper back: how you move, what’s sore and what’s likely driving it. Treatment is hands-on, with soft tissue work, mobilization, adjustments and sometimes acupuncture. Every patient leaves with exercises that help their neck feel good on their own, and we update them as you improve.

Many patients use chiropractic care and massage together as part of their maintenance plan. Most benefit plans cover chiropractic and massage from separate pools, so using both lets you get the care you want while making the most of your coverage.

When to get your neck checked sooner

Book an assessment if neck pain or stiffness lasts more than a couple of weeks, keeps coming back, or comes with headaches. See a doctor or go to emergency right away if you have a sudden, severe headache unlike any you’ve had, neck stiffness with a fever, new numbness or weakness in your arms, or dizziness, trouble speaking or vision changes.

FAQ

How many chiropractor visits will I need for neck pain?
Many people need four to six visits for a one-off episode. Some need fewer and some need more. We reassess at every visit and space things out as soon as you’re ready.

Can I just come in when my neck hurts?
Yes. Plenty of patients come in only when something flares up. Monthly maintenance suits people whose stiffness or headaches come back regularly, so they can stay ahead of it.

Is monthly chiropractic care covered by insurance?
Most extended health plans cover chiropractic up to a yearly amount, often around $500-1000. Monthly visits usually fit within that, and massage is often covered separately.

Do I need maintenance care if my neck feels fine?
No. If your neck feels good and you’re keeping up your exercises, you don’t need regular visits. Come back when something starts bothering you.

If your neck or upper back keeps getting stiff and sore, book an assessment with Dr. Josh Kiely or Dr. Stephanie Bonneau at our Kanata clinic and we’ll figure out how often makes sense for you.
