Do I Need a Referral to See a Chiropractor in Kanata?

No. You do not need a referral from your family doctor to see a chiropractor in Ontario. Chiropractors are legislated as primary care providers, which means you can book directly, no GP visit required. If you have been waiting for a referral before booking, you can stop waiting.

This surprises a lot of people, especially those used to navigating the Ontario health care system. But chiropractic care works differently, and knowing that removes one of the biggest barriers between you and getting some relief.

What About OHIP?

OHIP does not cover chiropractic care. It was delisted from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan back in 2004. So OHIP will not pay for your appointments, but it also means there is no gatekeeping process to get through. No referral. No pre-authorization. You simply call or book online.

Most patients in Kanata and across Ottawa cover chiropractic visits through extended health benefits (the kind that comes with many employer benefit packages) or pay out of pocket. Chiropractic expenses paid to a registered chiropractor are also eligible as a medical expense on your Canadian tax return, which is worth knowing if you are not covered.

Does My Extended Health Plan Require a Referral?

This is where things can vary a little. Most modern extended health plans do not require a physician referral for chiropractic, but some older plans still include that requirement. It takes about two minutes to call your benefits provider or check your plan booklet, and it is worth doing before your first visit.

Most plans cover a percentage of each visit up to an annual maximum, which commonly falls somewhere between $300 and $1,000 per year. That means you pay only your share at the time of your appointment rather than waiting weeks for a reimbursement.

If your extended health plan does not cover chiropractic at all, it may still be covered through WSIB if the injury happened at work, or through auto insurance if it followed a motor vehicle accident. Both of those routes generally have minimal barriers as well and our team can help you navigate that.

What Happens at Your First Appointment?

Your first chiropractic visit is mostly about figuring out what is going on. Your chiropractor will take a full history, examine the area of concern, and walk you through what they found. Treatment usually begins on that first day, or it may be a standalone assessment depending on your situation.

At Highlands Wellness, our chiropractors work alongside registered massage therapists and provide exercise rehabilitation for strength & mobility. Most musculoskeletal problems respond best to more than one approach, so your care plan might combine chiropractic adjustments with acupuncture, soft tissue work and a targeted exercise program. The goal is always to get you moving well and to give you the tools to stay that way.

More than 1.2 million Ontarians see a chiropractor each year. It is one of the most widely used and well-established primary care services in the province, and getting started is simpler than most people expect.

If you are ready to book, you can reach us directly at our Kanata clinic online or by phone. And if you are not quite sure whether chiropractic is the right fit for your concern, we are happy to have a quick conversation first. No referral needed, and no pressure.
